The roaming float rig is very versatile and can be used with live or dead baits, but with a live-bait it will go straight for cover, given half a chance and the pike can't take the bait if it doesn't know its there. So make sure the float is set shallow enough. It can be set at mid depth or fished on the bottom and is very low resistance, there is nothing like the sight of a float slowly sliding off and going under.
